Even though I hate cold weather, I have to admit that dressing up in winter can be fun. Twice the clothing and twice the accessories!

Lots of people in New York can only buy very small trees as big ones won't fit in our apartments or up the stairs.

In the last few weeks I got a chance to do two different illustrations for The New Yorker, both about awesome blonde women.

The first was for the upcoming movie "My Week With Marilyn," starring Michelle Williams. I decided to depict Marilyn still being her glamorous self in a headscarf and cool cat-eye shades (that I want) while dodging the paparazzi in London.

The second piece, which is in this week's issue, features Tippi Hedren, another wonderful 60s blonde, from Hitchcock's "The Birds." This job was super quick - got the initial e-mail Thursday night, final due Friday morning - so exciting and fun!

Film Forum is showing several films featuring Bernard Hermann's scores from October 21st to November 3rd, including "Vertigo," "Psycho," and "The Birds." I'm definitely going to go see "Psycho" on the big screen, it's my favorite. Everyone knows this iconic music:

Harry Potter & Ten Paces and Draw

This week I participated in Harry Potter Week on the Ten Paces and Draw blog. Ten Paces and draw is a blog about collaboration and illustration. Every week there is a theme, and every Monday a few artists submit sketches based upon that theme which are then swapped among the artists and brought to final by Thursday evening. Tight deadline, but super fun!

I was so excited by the sketch I received because I it had tons of fun detail and I love drawing interiors. It was drawn by the awesome Francesca Buchko.

Here is the sketch I submitted, of Harry, Ron and Hermione herbology-in' it up in simpler times before You-Know-Who made everything all dark and not

child-appropriate, haha. It was brought to final by the cool Trevor Basset.

This might be my last year at my current apartment, so with my lease ending in June I've been fantasizing about what my new place could look like (I LOVE decorating!). The bedroom in this painting (what is it with me and bedrooms?? I can't help it!) is a mixture of things I really want (the classic Unikko Marimekko comforter, a cool rug and an awesome view) and things I already have (my gold motorcycle helmet, an amazing print by my friend Rand Renfrow, pink underwear... and of course my sleepy dog and boyfriend). What does your fantasy room look like?

My painting is based on Jeremy Scott's NYFW Fall 2011 show, which I LOVED. Not for the clothes as much as the styling. The ponytails and make-up were amazing!

While I was home over Christmas my mom (who is an elementary school teacher) complained that my blog was not very kid-friendly anymore. Sorry mom! The illustrations in this post are definitely not appropriate to look at from work. The piece above was in the Dino Show at the Double Punch Gallery in San Francisco which was organized by Ryan De La Hoz (Thanks Ryan!). I'm not much for drawing dinosaurs so I kind of took it in another direction more palatable to me.

I painted this ultra evil demon girl for my boyfriend for Christmas. He liked it! My mom did not.

My Week in Bologna

"My Week in Bologna" was a personal journal report I made for the Parsons Illustration blog,Words & Pictures, all about my trip to the Bologna Book Fair last March (where I met Frederik Jurk, who I talk about in my journal!). This is a Zelda piece I did for Cory Schmitz's "The Controller" - a video game art and culture magazine.

I based it on my favorite Zelda game, Ocarina of Time, which I just recently beat (and yes, it came out in 1998, don't hate!). The little fairy in the corner next to Link is Navi, a character that is supposed to act as your helper throughout the game but who is usually just very irritating.

I chose to have Link about to battle Shadow Link, one of the bosses in the game. I love the idea of having to defeat yourself to win!

How To Win Her Love is a book I did illustrations for this summer. It's a super funny, sweet, and charming book by Rudolph Delson, all about how to get the girl of your dreams. Here's what is says on the back cover:

I've found that I have some more time on my hands now and in the past I've had people ask me about doing work personally for them. Now I'm ready! A commissioned piece could be anything from a portrait of you, you and your significant other, your dog, your mom - you know - anything! I love drawing and painting people the most but if you're familiar with my work you know that I can do pretty much anything else as well.

If you commissioned me, you would receive an original artwork painted by me on professional quality watercolor paper. I generally use gouache, acrylic and colored pencil to do most of my pieces. Pricing would depend on whether you wanted something in full color or black and white, and the size of the piece. E-mail me about it and we can negotiate!

I'm super excited to begin on some of these and will post some of the commissioned work in the coming weeks.

NOW - I've been asked whether I was going to make prints of my work in the past, particularly my Boyfriend Criteria series, and the answer is YES! I am going to make prints.

I'm planning on buying a printer and making them myself, so any piece is game. Please let me know if there's anything in particular you would be interested in!

My Cute Boys illustration is being used on a journal on sale at Barnes and Noble now! Buy it here or in stores.

I'm super pleased with how it turned out! It has a ribbon bookmark, spot gloss, and even cute endpages. The inside is graph paper (my favorite!).

Since this was a school project (through Parsons) I didn't actually get paid, but maybe if enough people buy this Barnes and Noble will hire me again!

The Endless Prom

A little more than a month ago I got a call from Kim Bost at the New York Times asking me to do an illustration for the Letters op-ed page about some schools having their proms on weeknights because of too much ~PARTYING~. I was super excited and started sketching right away because it was a very tight deadline - due at 5:30 the same day!

Here are my sketches:

They decided to use the #4 with a tweak of adding backpacks to some of the dancers. And this is how the final turned out!

This is an assignment from earlier this year. It was super open - "What I Did Over Winter Break." I thought of the most memorable thing that I did, which was to see the movie Hausu by Nobuhiko Obayashi. It is truly the weirdest, best movie I have ever seen!

FREAK SHOW

My school is doing a project with the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company, which is an amazing organization which I suggest you check out!: www.superherosupplies.com/

Basically, there is a store in Brooklyn (right by my old apartment, actually) that sells exclusively superhero (and villain) supplies - anti-matter, masks, capes, invisibility spray, you name it - anything any self-respecting superhero or villain would need. The store is quite small, but behind a secret shelf there is 826NYC, a nonprofit organization that helps young students with their writing.

For this project each of us was assigned a superhero or supervillain that was created by one of the students at 826NYC.

The character I received was FREAK SHOW, a super villain. Freak Show terrorizes the universe! He can shapeshift and get the powers of whatever he turns into, and if he can't, he stabs that thing and eats it. He loves to murder and steal. His parents died when he was a baby. His biggest nemesis is Superman. His lair is at the top of Mt. Everest.

I had a lot of fun with this project. I decided to depict Freak Show getting ready for a night out on the town in his secret lair, or, you know, bedroom. I always love drawing someone in their room or special place because you can tell so much about a character or person by what they keep in their private quarters. I really hope I get to meet the kid that created Freak Show at some point and shake his/her hand!

My school is participating in a bestiary show for the Bologna Children's Book Fair and some students were asked to pick a beast (real, mythical, something you imagined) and illustrate it. I was reading up on actual old medieval bestiaries, which had a description of a fox that I included with the image. I chose to make the fox into a sort of bad teenager, because teenage boys are the devil.

I'm going to be in Bologna representing my school at the fair from the 22nd to the 27th. I'm super excited!

Underbelly Printing recently put on a show in San Antonio and Houston called PART MYTH, which featured the work of 19 artists, which they hand printed in their shop. They also bound them all together and sold them as an awesome book, but I think they're sold out.

This is my piece - Road Runner and Watermelon Head from Sugartown (my comic I'm working on!). It's three colors and they did an awesome job printing it - I'm so pleased!

I just started my last semester at Parsons and I'm super excited to start working on my first Senior Portfolio assignment, which is to create an image based on an experience we had over winter break. I think I'm either going to do something about how I saw Fantastic Mr. Fox four (FOUR) times, or something about the AMAZING Japanese horror film called House I saw last week. So excited!

I finally decided to start a blog! I figured it will be a lot easier to update this than my actual website so I'll do it more frequently.

I just got back from a vacation in Florida with my family and am chilling in Oklahoma for the next week. It's been super fun but I'm really bummed that I missed the opening for Dime Bag 3! It's a show at Giant Robot NY with more than 240 artists who all made pieces that are 3x3, or small enough to fit in a dime bag. A TONNNNN of artists I love are in the show, as well as a lot of my friends, like Roxie Vizcarra, Christine Young, Kaeleen Wescoat-O'Neill and others! I am super excited to head over to GRNY as soon as I get back in the city to check it out. For now there are a lot of pictures on the Giant Robot NY website and flickr page.
